The New Theatre Oxford is the main commercial theatre in Oxford, England. It has a capacity of 1,785 and is located in the heart of the city. It puts on a wide variety of shows, including musical theatre, stand-up comedy, and concerts.
The first incarnation of the theatre opened in 1836 and put on music hall entertainment. In 1886 this was replaced by a new premises, which were the home of Oxford University Dramatic Society. The present building with it’s art deco interior has stood since 1933 and was designed by The Milburns family who also designed The Saville and Dominion Theatres in London. Since then until 1972 it was in the hands of the Dorrill family, the era of which came to an end as the Howard and Wyndham’s provincial theatre chain group took over.
In has had several different names, owners and guises since those days and received a refurbishment in 2003 when it reverted back to it’s original name, The New Theatre. The Ambassador Theatre Group bought the theatre in 2009 and are the current owners.
